Robert Pattinson's 'Lost' Movie Hits DVD Next Week
'The Haunted Airman,' televised in the U.K. in 2006, makes its Stateside debut Tuesday.
By Larry Carroll
Over the last year or so, he has become one of the most closely scrutinized celebrities in the entire world. Every time Robert Pattinson sneezes, it seems like 12 supermarket tabloids run a cover story. So, how is it that the "Twilight" saga superstar could be surprising his fans with a brand-new film that comes out next week?
"The Haunted Airman" premieres on DVD on Tuesday, a release date that has taken even RPattz's most loyal fans (who've scrambled to see such little-known flicks as "How to Be" and "Little Ashes") by surprise. It has had little to no publicity on any of Rob's fan sites, and there is little written about the film online.
"This Halloween, 'Twilight' heartthrob Robert Pattinson takes a break from playing the vampire Edward Cullen and tries life as a human in a spine-tingling WWII-era ghost story," begins a press release sent to reporters this week announcing the film's impending release. "The supernatural thriller 'The Haunted Airman' stars Pattinson as a wounded Royal Air Force pilot tormented by psychological horrors and a slow descent into madness. Julian Sands ('Ocean's Thirteen,' '24') and Rachael Stirling ('The Young Victoria,' 'Still Crazy') add to the suspense with supporting roles. The film, based on the best-selling 1948 novel 'The Haunting of Toby Jugg' by Dennis Wheatley, premieres to U.S. audiences on DVD via E1 Entertainment on October 13."
Considering that even his not-made films are followed with a fervor, the big question is a simple one: Where did this "lost" Robert Pattinson movie come from? The answer may be as spooky as the ghost story itself.
Filmed five years ago, "The Haunted Airman" was one of Pattinson's first paid gigs as an actor and was shot in the U.K. as "The Haunting of Toby Jugg." The 68-minute movie aired on BBC television in October of 2006 — two years before "Twilight" would make Pattinson a household name. Cast in the title role, RPattz plays a disabled WWII soldier.
"Flight Lieutenant Toby Jugg, confined to a wheelchair after being wounded in combat, arrives at a remote mansion in Wales to recuperate," the new press release says of the film's plot. "Suffering terrible nightmares and visions, he suspects the methods of his psychiatrist, Dr. Hal Burns (Sands). Though his beautiful aunt Julia (Stirling) seems to be the only person he can trust, circumstances arise that cause him to doubt even her intentions. Is the lieutenant the victim of an eerie paranormal haunting, or a cruel conspiracy tied to his past?"
Although the release (and the film's artwork) is undoubtedly aimed at Rob's enormous "Twilight" fanbase, the movie features a much-younger-looking Pattinson.
"Just as the buzz for the Twilight saga's 'New Moon' begins to reach a fever pitch prior to its November premiere," the press release teases, " 'The Haunted Airman' — in the vein of blood-curdlers 'The Others' and '1408' — delivers Pattinson and otherworldly chills to his legions of fans!"
But will his legions want to watch the film? Stay tuned, as we'll have more details on "The Haunted Airman" in the next few day

TRADUCTION
By Larry Carroll

The Haunted Airmand DVD reviewed by Monsters and Critics
The Haunted Airman is based on Dennis Wheatley’s The Haunting of Toby Jugg. That won’t matter much to most as the reason it might fly off the shelves is that Twilight’s Robert Pattinson is in it. There’s not much mushy stuff so don’t expect much happiness from screaming tweens.
During World War II, Lt. Toby Jugg (Robert Pattinson) is injured during a bombing run. He’s confined to a wheelchair and has been sent to the rural clinic of Dr. Hal Burns (Julian Sands) to recuperate.
His Aunt Julia (Rachael Stirling) has taken him there and he appears to be overly familiar with her. However, he soon starts seeing visions of spiders and that perhaps Dr. Burns doesn’t have his best interests at heart.
Dennis Wheatley was an author who wrote occult thrillers in jolly olde England and was a bestselling author in the 50s and 60s. His two best known works might be the novels that were adapted into the Hammer films The Devil Rides Out and To the Devil – A Daughter. Will that matter to most that will be buying or renting this DVD? Not really I’d imagine as they’ll be snapping it up for other reasons. That reason is represented by the large headshot of Robert Pattinson on the cover.
He’s actually third billed on the film (if I remember the billing correctly) and Julian Sands it top billed (again if I remember correctly). Pattinson’s star is on the rise and the New Moon film is coming soon, but he wasn’t much known when this BBC production was done in 2006.
The Twilight fan in my house was pretty stoked to see this flick on the old review table, but she only lasted about 10 minutes into the film before losing interest. I’m thinking that will be the way that most of today’s kids will treat this BBC adaptation. It’s not exactly fast going, Pattinson is confined to a wheelchair most of the time, and the romantic bits are not exactly stressed.
It’s also more with his older aunt and not a “Bella.” No shiny vampires here. Wheatley fans might not appreciate that the Satanism has been excised from the film. I’m not too familiar with the novel, but if Wikipedia is to be believed, Old Scratch played a much bigger role in the book. It’s not really hinted at that the devil is in the details. It seems more of a psychological jealousy on Jugg’s part.
The novel also made clear that there was some inheritance at stake, but I don’t remember that being voiced in the film. The 70 minute film veers toward psychological scares and was actually very well made, but those wanting Twilight will probably be disappointed in the film.
The Haunted Airman is presented in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) and is enhanced for 16x9 televisions. The only special feature is the 90 second trailer.
If you like your scares more psychological and on the course of Robert Wise’s the Haunting you might appreciate this little chiller. Those expecting something Twilight of Robert Pattinson will probably be bored and leave the room to go watch Twilight again.
The Haunted Airman is now available at Amazon and AmazonUK. Visit the DVD database for more information.

Le DVD The Haunted Airmand examiné par Monsters and Critics
Ses 2 bestsellers furent adaptés par Hammer films: The Devil Rides Out and To the Devil – A Daughter.

The Haunted Airman” Review
Robert Pattinson finds himself facing the same mountain that Daniel Radcliffe has begun to successfully scale: living down the pop-culture mantle cast upon him. Unlike Radcliffe however, Pattinson has wisely chosen to start the process with all due haste so as not to be forever known as “that Twilight vampire guy”. However, before Twilight was even a twinkle on his horizon, he made The Haunted Airman, a made-for-television movie first aired in the UK in 2006 and canned until this 2009 release when the American audience will get another taste of pre-Twilight Pattinson. Unfortunately, there’s a strong parallel between the two roles. It may help show that he can do more than brood and talk wistfully about a romance he can’t let himself have (although there is an element of that here as well) but there’s still one distracting drawback: he still looks like a vampire. The Haunted Airman follows the right path to help Pattinson to that effect save for one thing: he still looks like a vampire. So much so that it outshines an unfortunately dim narrative which never fully establishes itself because of its stunted 70 minute run-time. You can see the plans for a good feature-length story, but the whole thing just peters out instead of climbing to the fully deserved dramatic climax. What a shame. Consequently it does little to help convince non-Pattinson fans of his range (which does exist).
Grounded flight lieutenant Toby Jugg (Pattinson) has taken psychological refuge in the care of Dr. Hal Burns (Julian Sands) who proposes a unique style of treatment (for all his patients) to get people back on their feet. As Burns treats Jugg and forces him to confront facets of his fears, he also denies his patient communication which begins to make Jugg doubt the good doctor’s intentions. The object of Toby’s written affections, Julia (Rachael Stirling), seems to mirror his sentiments but her compliance with Burns’ doctrine causes the patient a growing sense of unease. Eventually Toby begins to doubt his senses and eventually begins to wonder if the things he sees are real or hallucinations of his mania.
The familiar thriller skeleton was reanimated in the time of a world war to give the well-worn material a new spin – but it still feels all too old. The parts of The Haunted Airman that seem worthwhile in their own right never receive the development they deserve. Instead, it spends all its time rehashing the very generic story and consequently becomes just another lazy psychological playground. There was ample opportunity to tie Toby’s delusions into the unique time period setting and explore it fully from that angle, but it just never happens. Writers Chris Durlacher and Dennis Wheatley taunt us with the story they could have told and then just yank it away with no remorse.
As was said before, what really makes the film significant is the performances within and whether or not they help Pattinson distract from his pop-culture rampant appearance in the Twilight series – even retroactively. For most, this will be the second film they see Pattinson star in, making Twilight their frame of reference for the actor’s abilities. Pattinson’s Toby Jugg easily has more depth than the brooding and terse vampire Edward, but thanks to the makeup effects and the black and white sequences in the film we’re reminded all too readily of the bloodless cheeks he sports in the other franchise. At least Radcliffe didn’t go on to play a young magician or facially scarred youth in his first non-Potter features, he at least had some sense of the distance he needed to place between his fame and his long-term career. The film’s rerelease almost four years later for mass consumption does little to bolster his credibility. His performance may be stronger but it screams an unfortunate theme of dull characters. Even Little Ashes, in which he portrayed Salvador Dali, offered little variation in his distant and aloof style which has pervaded both Toby and Edward. (”Pattinson seems ignorant to this,” was omitted from the new review.)
Then we have Julian Sands, an actor it’s nigh impossible to say anything good about without adopting the same tongue in cheek attitude you think he’s using for all of his parts – even though he’s not. That’s just how he acts. His smarmy overacting affects every scene and after awhile you either learn to laugh along with his performance or it just bugs you. The former is recommended for The Haunted Airman, or the 70 minutes will feel like forever.
Visually the film has a very interesting aesthetic. On one hand the black and white treatment wanders too close to the Twilight feel that Pattinson needed to evade, but outside of that influence the film has definite appeal. The direction of Chris Durlacher (known for a string of made-for-television movies just like this one) lacks any real subtlety and as a result the hokey spider and spider-web visuals feel childish instead of creepy.
DVD Bonus Features:
You would like to think that they’d try to supplement a too-short film with some sort of padding (an interview or even a production piece) but it seems that’s just not the case.

TRADUCTION
Critique de The Haunted Airman
