Sultry vampire's daring escape from twilight zone
Robert Pattinson wants his fans to know he can act, Paul Byrne reports

Just before the first Twilight movie took over the world's box-office, Robert Pattinson had a pretty good career on the go. During his breakthrough year of 2008, the young London lad picked up the Best Actor gong at the Strasbourg Film Festival, for How To Be and the New Hollywood Award. Shortly after Twilight came out at the end of the year, Pattinson started picking up a very different breed of award.

Hello! magazine gave him its Most Attractive Man of 2008 award. Yahoo knighted him Top Movie Heart Throb of 2008, while Rolling Stone magazine dubbed him the Hottest Actor of 2008.

"Yeah, I did notice a change in the kind of awards I was getting," smiles the 26-year-old actor.

"They weren't so much based on my work as my sudden status as this pin-up. Very flattering on one level, but I knew then, okay, it's going to take a little time before people see beyond that, beyond Edward Cullen, and give me a chance to actually act."

Pattinson has come a long way from when I first met him, in December 2008. Today, he has learnt how to keep his head down when he's not working. And, with the very real danger of being typecast as that sultry vampire, he's had to find roles that he hopes will prove that he's more than just a cute guy. Which goes some way to explaining why he is working with Canada's doctor of strange, David Cronenberg, the man behind Crash, Dead Ringers and Spider.

The film is Cosmopolis, Pattinson playing a multimillionaire whom we follow over 24 hours as he cuts a swathe through Manhattan.

"What actor doesn't want to work with David Cronenberg? He's a true original and you know you're going to have a very different kind of experience making one of his movies. More importantly, audiences are going to know it's going to be a different kind of experience," says Pattinson.

Juste avant que le 1er film Twilight ne domine le box-office mondial, Robert Pattinson avait une assez belle carrière en route. Lors de sa révélation en 2008, le jeune Londonien avait emporté le prix du Meilleur Acteur au festival du film de Strasbourg pour How To Be mais aussi le prix New Hollywood Award. Peu de temps avant la sortie de Twilight à la fin de cette année, Pattinson a commencé à récolter une toute nouvelle sorte de récompenses.

Hello! magazine lui a donné le titre de L'Homme le plus attirant en 2008 award. Yahoo l'a gratifié du titre de Plus beau gosse au cinéma en 2008, alors que le magazine Rolling Stone le nommait Acteur le plus sexy de 2008.

"Oui, j'ai remarqué le changement dans les récompenses que je recevais,"dit en souriant le jeune acteur de 26 ans.

"Elles n'étaient pas basées sur mon travail mais sur mon soudain statut de pin-up. Très flatteur à un niveau, mais je savais alors qu'il allait falloir un petit peu de temps pour que les gens voient au delà de ça, au delà d Edward Cullen, et me donnent la chance de vraiment montrer de quoi je suis capable"

Pattinson a parcouru un long chemin depuis notre 1ère rencontre en Décembre 2008. Aujourd'hui, il a appris à garder la tête baissée quand il ne travaille pas . Et avec le véritable danger ne pas être catalogué comme le sensuel vampire, il a dû trouver des rôles qui, il l'espère, prouveront qu'il n'est pas qu'un mec mignon. C'est ce qui explique qu'il a travaillé avec le docteur de l'étrange au Canada David Cronenberg, l'homme derrière Crash, Dead Ringers et Spider.

Ce film est Cosmopolis, Pattinson y joue un multi-millionnaire que nous suivons pendant 24 heures alors qu'il se fraye un chemin dans Manhattan.

"Quel acteur ne voudrait pas travailler avec David Cronenberg? C'est une personne vraiment originale et vous savez que vous allez vivre une expérience différente en faisant un de ses films. De plus, ce qui est important, le public sait que ce sera une expérience différente," dit Pattinson.

Cosmopolis est actuellement au cinéma.
