He's been Edward Cullen ever since he was Harry Potter's Cedric Diggory, but for Robert Pattinson, the actor who plays the glittery vampire hero of the Twilight movie franchise, it's been a steep learning curve.

“When you first sign on to something when you were nobody, you feel like everything's totally out of control,” he said in Sydney today, where he is promoting the final Twilight instalment. “Once you've experienced it once, you realise how to have a little bit more control over it.”

If people were whispering about you in the next room you probably want to know what they're saying, but really you'll always regret it because they're probably talking s--- about you.

One of the things the actor would like to control is the moniker that has become attached to him through the Twilight publicity whirlwind: Rpatz. “I would like to break the hands and mouth of the person who came up with it,” he says with a chuckle.

It's only been five years since the first Twilight film hit our cinemas and the book phenomenon became a pop-culture behemoth, introducing “RPatz” and “KStew” to our worlds and adding phrases such as “Team Edward”, “Team Jacob” and “Twi-hards” to the lexicon.

For the actor, whose relationship with Kristen “KStew” Stewart has become inextricably linked with the films' publicity and marketing, the unique nature of the Twilight culture is partly to blame for the obsession fans have with the real-life actors.

“That's the one thing I've been annoyed about by the whole thing,” explains Pattinson. “The kind of 'team' aspect of it. It's strange. I think that's what has created a very strange atmosphere around how the movies are promoted and stuff. It's making it like a sport or something. People can't really watch the films any more because they're thinking about all this other silliness.”

This “sport” has seen every aspect of his relationship with Stewart scrutinised on the internet, from early speculation as to whether the two were genuinely an item, through to Stewart’s recent affair with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders, followed by her public apology and reunion with Pattinson. Frustratingly for Pattinson, he finds it hardest not to read the internet coverage when it is at its worst.

“When you're promoting something, it's weird; it's like a strange sort of addiction. If people were whispering about you in the next room you probably want to know what they're saying, but really you'll always regret it because they're probably talking s--- about you. It's this weird thing. You only do it if you're feeling bad, and want to make yourself feel worse. If you're feeling good you never look at it.”

So is he looking at it now?

“Basically, yes,” he laughs. “I try and avoid it, because it doesn't really make any difference. I mean you think it does for a minute but everyone forgets really quick.”

Pattinson remains philosophical about questions about his relationship. “It's really not up to you, you could talk about absolutely nothing, the editor is going to put it however they want anyway. It's part of the thing where you reveal what you want to reveal and you talk about what you want to talk about. People ask you about whatever they think the audience is interested in and you can't really dictate.”

He is more bemused by the response to his other roles. “I think just because Twilight became so prominent and kind of mainstream, people think I'm similar to the character, but Edward's such a specific part. I always find it so funny when you do any other part. They're like 'this is him kind of acting now'. What did you think I was doing in Twilight?”

“Quand vous signez pour la 1ère fois pour quelque chose et que nous n'êtes personne, vous avez l'impression que tout est hors de contrôle,” a t-il dit à Sydney aujourd'hui, où il fait le promotion du dernier Twilight . “Une fois que vous avez vécu cette expérience; vous vous rendez compte que vous pouvez avoir un petit plus de contrôle sur ça.”

Si les gens chuchotaient sur vous dans l'autre pièce, vous voudriez sans doute savoir ce qu'ils disent mais vous le regrettez vraiment car ils disent sans doute des conneries sur vous.

Une des chose que l'acteur aimerait contrôler est le surnom qu'on lui a donné depuis ce tourbillon médiatique que fut Twilight : Rpatz. “J'aimerais briser les mains et la bouche de la personne qui l'a inventé ,” dit il en riant.

Cela ne fait que 5 ans que le film Twilight est sorti au cinéma et le phénomène littéraire est devenu un événement culturel populaire qui a introduit les notions de “RPatz” et“KStew” dans nos mondes et on a jouté des phrases comme “Team Edward”, “Team Jacob” et les“Twi-hards” à notre lexique.

Pour l'acteur , dont la relation avec Kristen “KStew” Stewart est devenu étroitement liée à la publicité du film et au marketing, la nature unique de la culture Twilight est en partie causée par l'obsession des fans pour la vraie vie des acteurs .

“C'est la seule chose qui m'ennuie depuis le début de tout ça,” explique Pattinson. “Cet aspect de 'team'. C'est étrange. Je pense que c'est ce qui a créé une atmosphère très étrange autour des films , de leur promotion etc... Ca les transforme en une espèce de sport . Les gens ne peuvent plus regarder les films sans penser à toute cette stupidité.”

Ce “sport” a vu tous les aspects de sa relation avec Stewart sous la loupe sur internet, des premières spéculations à savoir si ces deux là forment vraiment un couple, en passant par la récente tromperie de Stewart avec le réalisateur de Snow White and the Huntsman , Rupert Sanders, suivie de ses excuses publiques et sa réconciliation avec Pattinson. Ce qui est frustrant pour Pattinson, c'est qu'il trouve très dur de ne pas lire ce qui est écrit sur internet quand les choses sont le pires possible.

“Quand vous faites la promotion de quelque chose, c'est étrange , c'est comme une drôle addiction. Si les gens chuchotent dans la pièce d'à côté , vous voulez savoir ce qu'ils disent mais vous allez forcément regretter car ils disent sans doute des conneries. C'est ce qui est bizarre. Vous ne le faites que si vous vous sentez mal et si vous voulez vous sentir encore pire . Si vous vous sentez bien , vous le faites jamais .”

Donc en ce moment, est ce qu'il regarde internet?

“Tout simplement oui,” dit il en riant “J'essaie d'éviter ça car ça ne fait aucune différence. Vous pensez que ça change les choses une minute mais tout le monde oublie vraiment rapidement.”

Pattinson reste philosophique sur les questions concernant sa relation . “Vous ne pouvez rien y faire, vous pouvez ne dire absolument rien , le rédacteur en chef publiera ce qu'il voudra de toute façon. Ca fait partie de ce que vous révélez car vous avez envie de le faire et vous parlez de ce que vous avez envie de parler. Les gens vous posent des questions sur ce que le public a envie de savoir et vous ne pouvez rien leur dicter.”
Il est plus déconcerté par la réponse à ses autres rôles. “Je pense qu'à cause du succès mondial et important de Twilight, les gens pensent que je ressemble à mon personnage, mais Edward est un rôle tellement particulier. Je trouve ça tellement plus marrant quand je fais d'autres rôles. Ils se disent "Là, c'est lui qui joue un rôle à présent". Qu'est ce qu'ils croyaient que je faisais dans Twilight?
